A superbly detailed model of the Talyllyn Railway locomotive ‘Tom Rolt’. Built from parts of a 1949 Barclay 3 foot gauge which had previously worked on the Irish peat fields (Bord na Mona no. 3). Whilst at the Talyllyn and awaiting its rebuild, it became affectionately known as Irish Pete. Its metamorphosis into its current design was completed by the Talyllyn Railway in 1991 to become T.R. no. 7. It is named ‘Tom Rolt’ as a fitting tribute to the railway author and early Talyllyn preservationist, in fact the preserved railway’s first general manager, Tom Rolt. The model has a wealth of detail and the usual Roundhouse proven engineering. The boiler is internally gas fired, has a water level gauge and a water top up valve. The safety valve is correctly located in the dome and of course the pressure gauge is in the cab. Valve gear is the normal simplified Walschaerts type, the motion on this model being connected to the rear wheel, which is prototypically outside the frames. As standard, the wheels are insulated. The minimum radius on 32mm gauge is 2’ 6” or a little tighter on 45mm gauge. Available for either 32mm or 45mm gauge track (not adjustable) and in any of the Roundhouse colours, however the maroon or bronze green liveries are correct for Tom Rolt. Radio control of the locomotive is an option. | |
